Sports and Athletics

Sports and Athletics within the RAF Air Cadets offer a wide range of opportunities for cadets to get involved in both team and individual events, regardless of experience or ability. On a regular basis, squadrons take part in activities such as 6-a-side football, Softball and team games.

Beyond the squadron, cadets have the chance to represent their unit at Wing and Regional competitions. Athletics events typically include a full range of track and field disciplines, such as sprints, middle-distance running, relays, long jump, and throwing events.

Swimming galas are also held, where cadets can compete in different strokes and distances as part of a team, while cross-country competitions test endurance and determination across varied terrain. Many of these events lead to progression opportunities, with high-performing cadets selected to compete at Regional or even National level.

Alongside the competitive side, there is a strong focus on participation and personal development. Taking part in sports and athletics helps cadets improve their physical fitness, learn how to perform under pressure, and develop resilience and discipline. It also builds strong friendships, as cadets train and compete together, supporting each other and celebrating achievements as a team.
